Nestled on the southern edge of Wake County, Fuquay-Varina, the charming small town with the double name has boomed along with the rest of the Triangle. Originally two communities separated by a railroad track, Fuquay got its start in 1805 when a Frenchman located a mineral spring in his farm fields. “Taking waters” was a popular treatment for illness for most of the 19th century, and Fuquay Springs grew as a resort town.
Meanwhile a Civil War veteran named his nearby post office after his girlfriend, Varina. Both communities catered to the surrounding tobacco farmers and merged into one municipality in 1964. Both historic downtowns along Main and Broad streets have been preserved and today feature antique shops, restaurants and other local establishments.
The tobacco fields around downtown Fuquay-Varina have largely been replaced by subdivisions and shopping centers as this area has expanded. Fuquay-Varina is home to 18,000 residents, many of them newer North Carolina residents attracted by the affordable prices and nearby conveniences. Fuquay-Varina serves the commercial needs of southern Wake and nearby Harnett counties with many national chain stores, banks and medical facilities catering to residents of the region.
